If you want to model a healthy, Biblical view of money to your children, so they don’t have to struggle in their relationship with money like you did, here are 3 things you need to know first
#1 Your kids are picking up your beliefs about money
Your kids are picking up your beliefs about money (and you picked them up from your parents).
This is part of your financial legacy you’re leaving.
What do I mean? Let me illustrate
When Michelle came to me for our first session, she realized she was passing her poor money mindset on to her son.
“He was feeling guilty for asking me to spend extra money on him (money that I have plenty of to meet his needs, but I’ve been living as though I don’t) and it broke my heart. “
Some of the money beliefs we’ve picked up from our parents include:
- Unable to receive God’s generosity
- Shame for asking for what you want
- Afraid to sell because you’ll lose friends
- Afraid to charge higher rates because of your mom (or dad) telling you to stop asking for money
- Wealth is evil
Often you picked up these beliefs from your parents, either an experience with them or words that they spoke over you.
Now this belief is showing up subconsciously in your relationship with money, in your business, and in the financial legacy you are passing down to your own children.
Where do you find a Biblical basis for these beliefs being passed down?
Let’s take a quick look at Exodus 34:6-7
“The LORD, the LORD God, is compassionate and gracious, slow to anger, abounding in loving devotion and faithfulness, maintaining loving devotion to a thousand generations, forgiving iniquity, transgression, and sin. Yet He will by no means leave the guilty unpunished; He will visit the iniquity of the fathers on their children and grandchildren to the third and fourth generations.” Exodus 34:6-7

This allows you to then model what it looks like to have a prosperous, fruitful walk with God in the arena of money and business, in front of your children and grandchildren (and any other younger people in your life even if they aren’t your children).
Because you are the best teacher for your children, even your adult children - it’s not too late!
Your children learn best by watching you shift your money beliefs in alignment with the Word of God and experience freedom and peace of mind in your relationship with money.

“After helping me see some of the roots of my poor money mindset, we ended our session and I immediately invited my son to go shopping for that one last item that he “needed”… his own suitcase.
It may have seemed like “a waste of money!” before our meeting but afterwards I realized that I NEEDED to buy it for him. I NEEDED to break that mindset that hasn’t allowed me to receive God’s generosity.”

As it rang in my head and came out of my mouth as I made plans with my son… “The LORD your God is with you, the Mighty Warrior who saves. He will take great delight in you; in his love he will no longer rebuke you, but will rejoice over you with singing.”
