Prosperity Gospel Vs The Bible
We’re going to look at a couple of key points of the prosperity gospel and contrast that with Biblical truth.
I’ll show you how to break down the common barrier of being afraid of who you will turn into if you become wealthy, that keeps so many Christian female entrepreneurs from creating a flourishing business and a legacy of impact + generosity.
Stay tuned because as Christian women, there’s an area we are weak in (that the prosperity gospel preachers have down pat), but we need to know how the prosperity gospel preachers are misrepresenting Biblical truth and causing great harm.
Every Believer Should Be Wealthy
The prosperity gospel, also called the health and wealth gospel, is based on the premise that every believer can and should have a life filled with wealth and health.
If you don’t, then you either have a hidden sin or not enough faith.
While yes, God’s design is to prosper those who walk with Him so they might do good and be a blessing, drawing others to know Him as they reflect God’s generosity, there are a couple of factors we need to consider.
In the Bible, wealth is given to both the wicked and the righteous. There were many godly, faithful people who were extremely poor and many wicked people who were extremely wealthy.
God has given you the power to create wealth Deut 8:18 primarily through working and serving others so that their lives are made better.
But here’s the truth:
Does it require faith to believe that is God designed for wealth and that you are to be a steward of that wealth for good?
Absolutely!
You are called to believe in God and His Word.
You’re also called to walk out this faith in obedience by serving others to create this wealth through marketing your business and selling with serving as an example
Positively Confess Your Desires
Every favor you demand of God must be stated positively without wavering and as a result, God is required to answer exactly as you confess.
Yes, we are invited to ASK our Father God for anything, our cares, our needs, our desires and we’re told that He will give you whatever you ask in Jesus’ name as in John 16.
But you still must submit to God, His plan, His purpose, and His timing. He is not your puppet to do exactly as you say.
He is the one who is in control and has plans to prosper you, to bring restoration and blessing in all areas. His purpose is far more than you can see and you have to trust Him.
Many times yes we do receive what we ask for and there are times He chooses to give something better after taking us through the process of waiting.
James 4:3 says you don’t always receive because you ask with the wrong motives.
We should absolutely ask for what we need and desire, and then trust God with the answer.
Heart check: What are your motives for asking for wealth and prosperity?
Sowing Seed In Faith
Prosperity preachers are often speaking to impoverished communities saying that you must sow into their ministry financially if you want to see overflowing financial blessings come back to you.
They ask for heavy tithes from their followers.
Yes, there is a Biblical principle of sowing of generosity that comes back to you in overflowing abundance as seen in Deuteronomy 11, 2 Corinthians 9 and Luke 6 and others.
Receiving God’s generosity fully and knowing that all you have comes from God’s hand in the first place, allows you to then in turn become a generous person and reflect God’s generosity.
However, if you’re like the young rich ruler in Luke 18 who was so wealthy but didn’t do anything to alleviate the needs of the impoverished community around him, then you aren’t a reflection of God’s generosity.
One reason we as Christian women shy away from anything that looks like prosperity gospel
We see the prosperity preachers living luxurious lifestyles with jets and diamonds.
Yet I don’t know about you but when I hear reports of IRS fraud and don’t see a level of generosity that matches their wealth, I wonder what’s going on.
Tithing and giving needs to be from a heart of seeing how much God has given you, showing your dependence on Him to provide, and being so grateful it shows up in generous giving to His work and taking care of His other children… all in proportion to how much God has blessed you.
Not from being commanded by a person in a position of authority to tithe heavily with the promise of abundant financial return.
The prosperity gospel proclaimers often cause a great deal of harm to the people who follow them in this area.
Many Christian Women Play Small With The Promises Of God
I’ve seen God bring about miraculous healings and provide abundantly for the financial needs of those that ask.
As daughters of the Highest God, we have access to EVERYTHING Jesus has given.
His restoration is complete in all areas, from bearing all our sin and shame, even that shame around money, to healing us with His stripes.
Anytime restoration is mentioned in the Bible, the passages describe fruitful and abundant blessings.
Healing… protection… restoration of all that was stolen or destroyed… fruitful and profitable businesses… peace… knowing and walking with the Lord our God.
You shouldn’t throw out the incredible promises of abundant blessings that come with restoration, just because you’re uncomfortable with the health and wealth preachers.
Or because of the comments other people have said about wealth and wealthy people.
What We Can Learn From Prosperity Gospel
Because here’s the truth: God’s ultimate plan for us includes abundance, restoration, and wholeness in all areas.
He delights in prospering His children so that they can be a blessing.
Yes, in heaven we will see the full extent of this abundance, restoration, and wholeness in all areas,
Yet here on earth, we are called to be conduits of this same abundance, restoration, and generosity so that those around us might come to know our generous God.
You can experience Jesus’s redemption in your finances, in your business, in your mind, your relationships, and your health here and now.
Overall, we can do a better job of claiming in and walking in God’s promises of abundant blessings through the promises given to us in the Bible.
That’s where those in the prosperity gospel are doing much better than the rest of us.
You can ask boldly, and trust God with the results, the timing, and the answers.
What if you don’t get the answers you desire? Sin? Unbelief?
There have been many times I prayed for specific requests, claiming God’s promises, built up my faith, and then didn’t receive my request.
Or it took years of praying before I received what I was asking for, and often far more than I was asking for.
There are still some requests I’ve been praying on for well over a decade.
Are there times when you do need to overcome your unbelief in God’s word with faith, yes absolutely.
Are there times sin of disobedience blocks the full outpouring of blessings in your life, yes, the Bible does show these examples.
Yes. you should ask God to search your heart to see if either situation is happening and then repent.
But often, it’s not a matter of you not having enough faith or some hidden sin in your life.
You are still loved far more than you could ever imagine. God isn’t punishing you
As a Christian, you are covered under Jesus’ full and complete payment for any sin or disobedience. You are forgiven.
He is the one in control and there is far more to His purpose than we could ever see.
There are times He takes you through a prolonged difficult situation even as you pray desperately for this to be over because He wants to make you into a better reflection of His character.
He wants to reveal how He sustains you and how you continue to walk faithfully with God, making your life a testimony to His grace to all watching.
He wants to tune your ear to His voice and provide intimate encounters with His love for you.
What if He wants to give you more blessings than you could ever imagine when He does finally answer?
This is another area where those preaching the prosperity gospel really cause a great deal of harm in saying that you aren’t getting what you want because of a lack of faith or some sin.
Embrace The Truth + Step Into Incredible Blessings
